The College is aware that the Government of Alberta’s announcement regarding self-referral for certain preventative diagnostic imaging services, including CT, MRI, ultrasound and general x-ray, has raised questions among MRTs and DMSs.
The College received the new Preventative Health Testing Services Regulation late on July 29, 2026. We are currently reviewing the regulation, along with the related legislative and regulatory changes, to understand what this initiative may mean for registrants.
We recognize that a key concern for registrants is whether they can participate in this pathway while continuing to meet their existing responsibilities under applicable legislation, radiation safety requirements, the College’s Standards of Practice and Code of Ethics, and their employer’s policies and procedures.
Once our review is complete, the College will provide guidance to registrants by email and post it on this website.
If your employer implements a preventative health testing self-referral pathway before that guidance is issued, please contact the College before participating.
Thank you for your patience while the College completes this review.
